Nick Biagini

 
 

Nick Biagini is a New York based performer, educator, and composer/arranger. Nick has performed alongside such greats as Dave Holland, Arturo O’Farrill, Steve Wilson, Glen David Andrews, Nichelle Mungo, Charmaine Neville, and Mitch Chakour. He is a member of The Seulah Noh Jazz Orchestra, The Jeremy Turgeon Quintet, Foley, The BOSS Band, The Nick Biagini Quartet/Septet, The West Saxophone Quartet, Half-Astronaut, and the funk-fusion group Ballads.

Nick was born in Marshfield Massachusetts to a musical family, and began to pursue music at an early age- learning guitar at 5 and beginning saxophone lessons at 9. While in high school he attended the New England Conservatory Prep program studying with Mark Zaleski. After high school Nick earned his bachelor’s degree in Jazz and African American Musics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst 2018, and received two Student Downbeat Awards for his work with Jazz Ensemble 1 and his performance on Chris Foe’s graduate recital. Nick’s classical saxophone quartet, The West Quartet, are two-time state champions of the MTNA chamber music competition. During his time at UMass he studied privately with Jeff Holmes, Tom Giampietro, Felipe Salles, Jonathan Hulting-Cohen, Joe D’Aleo, and Carl Clements. Nick played saxophone in big bands and, jazz combos, accompanied the vocal groups, played in the classical chamber ensembles, and even played bass clarinet in the wind ensemble. Performing with The Jeff Holmes Big Band was another highlight of his undergraduate experience. Nick then went on to receive his Masters in Jazz Performance at The New England Conservatory in 2022, and was a recipient of the Henry T. and Mary W. Dunham Scholarship. During his time at NEC he studied privately with such greats as Melissa Aldana, Jerry Bergonzi, Frank Carlberg, Brian Levy, Donny McCaslin, and Miguel Zenon. He also got the opportunity to work in ensemble settings with Jason Moran, Dave Holland, and Arturo O’Farrill. At NEC Nick played in both of the jazz large ensembles (Jazz Orchestra and the Jazz Composers Workshop), was a soloist for the world premiere of Chris Brubeck’s piece “Fifty”, and was a member of multiple small jazz ensembles. While at NEC he also began studying composition and songwriting. After finishing his master’s degree, Nick moved to New York City.

Nick is deeply committed to education and sees it as a key part of his professional life. He continues to give back to the musical community by mentoring young musicians in a variety of different settings. Nick currently teaches band in the New York Public School system through the nonprofit Education Through Music. Nick was a faculty member of the Jazz/Rock/Pop and Woodwind departments at The South Shore Conservatory for 5 years and is still the Assistant Program Director for their Summer Music Festival. Nick also taught in Abington Public School and The Meadowbrook School in Weston.
